ServicesRetirement Income Planning

Retirement Income Planning in Santa Barbara

Building a nest egg is one task. Drawing it down so the checks keep coming for decades is a different one. We go over your accounts with you, then write out where each month's money will come from, in plain words you can follow.

What retirement income planning means here

Most people reach retirement with money in a few places: a 401(k) or IRA, some savings, maybe a pension, and Social Security down the road. The hard part is deciding what to draw from first, and how to keep a steady check coming if markets drop or you live to 95.

We work on that question with insurance tools we know well, like fixed and fixed indexed annuities and the cash value in a whole life or universal life policy. We also show you how they fit next to the money you already have. Some clients need one product. Some need none and just want a clear plan. We tell you which, and you decide.

We don't give tax or legal advice. When a choice has tax effects, we flag it and you can run it past your tax preparer before anything is signed.

What the work includes

  1. 01

    A full income picture

We list every source you expect to draw on and when it starts. Then we line it up against what you spend each month. Most people have never seen it written out side by side.

  2. 02

    Income gap estimate

We show where your guaranteed income falls short of your bills, and by how much. That gap is what the rest of the plan has to cover.

  3. 03

    Annuity options, explained

If an annuity makes sense, we compare a few. You see the payout, the surrender period and any fees on paper before you choose.

  4. 04

    Existing policy review

Plenty of clients hold an older whole life or universal life policy and haven't looked at it in a long time. We pull up its current cash value and show what it could do for you today.

  5. 05

    Beneficiary check

Retirement accounts, annuities and life policies each carry their own beneficiary line. We go through them with you so they match your wishes today.

Signs it's time to plan your income

  • You're within ten years of retiring

This is the window where choices still have room to work. Wait too long and some options get narrower or cost more.

  • You don't know your monthly number

If you can't say what you'll have coming in each month, you're guessing. A plan replaces the guess with a figure.

  • You're unsure when to take Social Security

Claiming early or late changes your check for life. We show how each age fits with the rest of your income so you can weigh it.

  • Your savings sit in the market with no floor

A bad year right as you retire can hurt for a long time. Some clients want part of their income protected from that.

  • A spouse depends on your pension

Pension survivor choices and life coverage often need to be decided together. Getting one wrong can leave a spouse short.

  • Living costs keep climbing

Rent, groceries and health costs rarely go down. A plan that only works at today's prices may not hold for twenty years.

Our steps from first call to written plan

  1. 1

    A first conversation

Tell us briefly where things stand and which money questions worry you most. We ask a handful of questions and agree on a time to meet.

  2. 2

    We gather the numbers

Bring statements for your accounts, any pension paperwork, your Social Security estimate and any life policies you own. We go through them with you, line by line.

  3. 3

We put the plan on paper

You get a written outline of your income sources by year, the gap, and two or three ways to close it. Each option shows its costs and limits plainly.

  4. 4

    You take your time

Take the outline with you, show your family or your tax preparer, and call us with questions. Nothing moves until you say so.

  5. 5

    We check back each year

Rates, health and plans change. We look over the plan with you once a year and adjust if it needs it.

What affects the cost of a retirement income plan

Sitting down and mapping your income doesn't commit you to buying anything. If you do choose a product, its cost depends on the details below. We show those details in writing before you decide.

Your age and start date
An annuity bought at 60 to start paying at 70 works very differently from one that pays right away. Timing changes the payout more than almost anything else.
How much you put in
The amount you move into an annuity sets the size of the income it can pay. Together we sort out what should stay in savings for surprises and what can go toward a monthly check.
Riders and features
Income riders, inflation adjustments and spousal options add protection but often carry a yearly fee or a lower starting payout. We show you the trade before you pick.
Surrender periods
Most annuities charge a fee if you pull out more than allowed in the early years. Longer surrender periods often mean better rates, but less freedom with your money.
New coverage for a spouse
When the plan adds a new life policy so a spouse stays covered, the premium follows how old you are and your medical history. Sometimes a policy you already own handles that need at a lower cost.

Retirement income questions we hear often

How much do I need saved before this is worth doing?

There's no minimum. Even with modest savings, knowing your monthly gap helps you decide when to retire and what to cut. Some of our most useful plans are for people with very little set aside.

Will you push me into an annuity?

No. An annuity fits some people and not others. If your pension and Social Security already cover your bills, we'll say so. You'll see every option and its downsides on paper.

Can my old whole life policy help in retirement?

Often it can. Its cash value may be borrowed against, withdrawn or used to fund other needs, and the coverage can still protect your spouse. We look at the actual policy before saying what it can do.

Do you tell me when to take Social Security?

We show how different claiming ages fit with the rest of your income so you can compare. The choice is yours. For tax questions on that choice, we suggest checking with your tax preparer.

Do you meet with people outside the city?

Yes. We work with clients in Goleta, Carpinteria, Montecito and around the South Coast, and much of the early work happens by phone.

What if my plans change after we set things up?

They usually do. That's why we review the plan with you each year. Some products have limits on changes, and we point those out up front so they don't surprise you later.
