Universal Life Insurance in Santa Barbara
This is permanent life insurance where you decide, within limits, how much to pay and when. It works well when it is funded right and poorly when it is not. Before you sign, we show you what yours needs each year and what a short payment does to it.
What universal life is, and when it fits
Under the hood, a universal life policy holds a cash value account. What you pay lands there. The insurer deducts a monthly charge for the coverage plus its fees, and whatever is left earns credited interest. The policy stays active as long as that account can keep paying the charges.
It suits people who want coverage that outlasts a 20 or 30 year term but want more control over payments than whole life gives. Business owners with uneven income are often drawn to it. So are people who want a set amount to reach a beneficiary no matter when they pass.
The weak spot is easy to explain. The cost of insurance climbs as you get older. Underpay for years and the account drains, and the policy can lapse late in life, right when it matters. We set it up so that does not happen, and we will tell you plainly if a term life or whole life policy would serve you better.

What we handle for you
- 01
A needs check before any quote
First we ask who relies on your income, what you still owe and how many years the protection has to run. Those answers decide the face amount, so it is not a round number picked out of the air.
- 02
Picking the right version
Universal life comes in several versions. A guaranteed version is built to keep the death benefit in force to a stated age, provided you pay the scheduled premium. Current-assumption and indexed versions aim for more cash value, but their results ride on interest rates or market indexes. We lay out what you give up with each.
- 03
Reading the illustration with you
Every quote comes with an illustration showing guaranteed values and projected values. We point out the guaranteed column first, since that is the one the insurer has to honor.
- 04
Death benefit option
Option A keeps the benefit level. Option B adds the cash value on top, which costs more. We help you choose based on what you want your beneficiary to receive.
- 05
Application and underwriting
We fill out the paperwork with you, help schedule any medical exam and keep you posted while the insurer reviews your health and history.
- 06
Check-ins after the policy is placed
We look at your annual statement with you and request a fresh in-force illustration when it makes sense, so you can see whether the funding still holds up.
Questions about Universal Life Insurance?
Call(805) 970-8230Signs universal life may be the right call
Your term policy ends before your needs do
Maybe you still have a spouse to support or a business partner to protect when the term runs out. A permanent policy keeps going.
Your income rises and falls
Seasonal or commission pay makes a fixed bill hard to plan around. Universal life lets you pay more in good months and less in lean ones, as long as you stay inside the policy's limits.
You want a set amount left behind
If the goal is a known sum for heirs, a charity or estate costs, a guaranteed universal life policy is often a lower-cost way to get there than whole life.
You own an older policy you do not understand
Universal life bought decades ago at higher interest rates may now be underfunded. If your statement shows the cash value shrinking, it is time for a look.
You need coverage for a business agreement
Buy-sell plans and key person coverage often need to last as long as the business does, not just a fixed term.
How it works with us
- 1
First phone call
It starts with a conversation about what this coverage is for. We ask your age, a general sense of your health and what you can comfortably put toward it. Nothing gets decided on that call.
- 2
Quotes and illustrations
We gather options from insurers and go through them with you, guaranteed numbers first. You see the result of paying the target premium and the result of paying less.
- 3
Application and exam
Once you settle on a plan, we fill out the application together. Most people then have a short paramedical exam, set for a time and place that works, often right at their business.
- 4
Policy delivery
After approval, we read the final policy with you page by page, including the beneficiary designation and any surrender charges. You still have the review period to change your mind.
- 5
Yearly review
Once a year we sit down with your statement. If credited rates or your life change, we talk about adjusting premiums or coverage while the gap is still small.
What moves the cost of universal life
The price of universal life comes down to you, how the policy is designed and how you fund it. Two people of the same age can pay very different amounts. We walk through each piece so the number makes sense before you commit.
- Your age and health rating
- Applying earlier, in better health, keeps the monthly insurance charge down for the life of the policy. Tobacco use, blood pressure and family history all play into the rating the insurer gives you.
- Face amount and benefit option
- A larger death benefit costs more. Choosing an increasing benefit instead of a level one raises the charges too.
- Length of the guarantee
- A guarantee that runs to age 90 is priced lower than one that runs to 121. We help you match it to the years you really need covered.
- How much cash value you want
- Paying above the minimum builds cash value you can borrow against later. Paying only the minimum keeps premiums low but leaves little cushion.
- Riders
- Add-ons like waiver of premium or chronic illness benefits add cost. We only suggest the ones that fit your situation.
Universal life questions we hear often
How is universal life different from whole life?
Whole life locks in the premium, and its cash value grows on a guaranteed schedule. With universal life you choose how much to pay and when, and the account grows with the interest the insurer credits. That freedom comes with a job: keeping an eye on the funding. Whole life needs less attention once it is in place.
Can my universal life policy lapse?
Yes. If the cash value runs out and the monthly charges cannot be covered, the policy lapses. This is the most common problem with older universal life policies. Paying the target premium and reviewing your statement each year are the best protection.
Can I skip a payment?
Usually yes, as long as the account holds enough to pay that month's charges. The catch is that every missed payment trims the years the policy can run, unless you catch up later. We can run the numbers so you see the effect first.
What happens if I cancel early?
Most universal life policies have surrender charges for the first several years. If you cancel during that period, you get back less than the cash value shown. We point out the surrender schedule before you sign.
Can you look at a policy I already own?
Yes. Have your latest statement handy and we can request an in-force illustration from the insurer. That shows whether the policy is on track or needs more funding, and what your options are.
